Festspielfrühling Rügen

Festspielfrühling Rügen

From March 15 to 24, 2013, the Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern will be having its “Festspielfrühling Rügen” for the second time. From the earliest days of the Festspiele MV, the breath-taking landscape of the island, with its beaches, horizons, and lavish architecture, has served as a backdrop for innumerable concerts during the summer season. Now the traditionally calmer pre-season in spring will be enlivened and enriched with the “Festspielfrühling” and a high-caliber, attractive program of music and culture.

Many famous painters, writers, and composers have explored Rügen and experienced the island’s unique charm – one of these artists was Johannes Brahms. He spent the summer months of 1876 in Sassnitz on Rügen and completed his first symphony here.
From March 15 to 24, 2013, the “Festspiele Spring on Rügen” will be devoting 19 events at 14 unusual venues to the composer Johannes Brahms and his contemporaries. Chamber concerts, a performance of his Symphony No. 1, a brunch concert, numerous other concert formats, and a varied program of accompanying events invite Festspiele guests to come learn about Brahms’ varied body of work and immerse themselves in his musical world.

The members of the renowned Fauré Quartett, arguably the most exciting German chamber-music ensemble at the present time, have taken over the artistic direction of the program. The four musicians – Erika Geldsetzer (violin), Sascha Frömbling (viola), Konstantin Heidrich (violoncello), and Dirk Mommertz (piano) – have been represented on major concert stages throughout the world for many years and have repeatedly received the ECHO Klassik and the German Record Critics’ Award (PdSK). They are looking forward to their first artistic directorship with enthusiasm and anticipation. “As a member of the large Prize Winner family of the Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, we are proud and happy to be presenting the first ‘Festspielfrühling Rügen’ in the coming year,” said Dirk Mommertz, pianist of the Furé Quartett.  “With us, audiences can look forward to magnificent concerts with magnificent artists! We have put together an extraordinary programme full of highlights and surprises!”
