Our Festspiel Seasons

Festspielfrühling Rügen is the Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern’s spring festival, which takes place over 10 days in March each year. Our visitors are invited to discover and rediscover musical treasures in intimate concerts with exceptional artists. Prize-winners from the Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern take over the artistic direction of the Festspielfrühling to create tailor-made programmes for the island concerts together with their friends and colleagues.

Over three months from mid-June to mid-September, the Festspielsommer brings music to the most beautiful locations in the region, be it old country manors or stately homes, barns or factory halls, churches or out in the open the air. Promising up-and-coming musicians perform alongside established stars of the classical music world and international orchestras. Our annual Prize-winner in Residence shapes the summer season with up to 20 concerts while special series such as »Landpartie« (Music in the Countryside), »Junge Elite« (Young Elites), »Unerhörte Orte« (Unheard Places), »360° ...« and our children’s and family programme »Mäck & Pomm« create special focus points and have become audience favourites.

Uniquely this year, the Festspielfrühling Rügen will become the Festspielherbst Rügen 2021. Almost all of the originally planned events can take place in the same or similar design. Under the artistic direction of the Armida Quartett, musicians such as Kit Armstrong, Eckart Runge, Nils Landgren, the Heath Quartet and others will be guests on the island of Rügen from October 15th to 24th, 2021. The internationally acclaimed actress Martina Gedeck could also be won for an event at short notice. Together with the pianist Sebastian Knauer, she will present a scenic-musical reading on George Gershwin.

Even in the dark season the Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern bring with the Festspielwinter music to the north-east. For years, the classical music festival has been bringing Christmas spirit to Ulrichshusen, Stolpe an der Peene, Schwiessel and Neubrandenburg on the Advent weekends. The New Year is traditionally welcomes on the first weekend in January with two New Year’s concerts at Ulrichshusen.

Our Festspiel Favourites

Unexpected musical experiences and personal encounters are trademarks of the Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The festival programme includes a broad range of series and ‘festivals within the festival’, where visitors can discover and focus on particular elements through a wide range of supplementary activities such as guided tours, listening experiments, artist talks and discussions over several days. With 2 x Hören (Listen Twice), visitors are afforded the time and space to listen intensively. 360° ... explores a particular instrument or formation from all sides, while the series Unerhörte Orte (Unheard Places) takes visitors on a voyage of discovery through architecture and music and leads them to unusual concert venues. We present promising emerging artists from all over the world in the series Junge Elite (Young Elites), Bothmer-Musik and Landpartie (Music in the Countryside).
